Seven Ways to Sunday

8/3/09 The Topical and Superficial

Been wandering around SF a lot as I look for a job. Picked up an old copy of Diane Arbus’ Aperture Monograph. Her words shook me. They made me realize how distracted and undisciplined I am. I’ve been in a long-running rut of shooting the topical, the expected, the comfortable and superficial. I don’t want to take these type of photos anymore, or at least not as often. It’s not about reflections or light or composition. There comes a point when it becomes a distraction. They prevent me from coming face to face with people. Mood is great, but not if you don’t have the people to go with it. I need to be comfortable enough with myself to pursue the specifics that I am fascinated by instead of wasting my time with the low hanging fruit.
