This is one of those pictures I’ve subconsciously ignored because it never felt like a successful shot. Some things change with time, and this is one of those things. As of late, this photo has taken on a new shape to me. It’s been redefined by how my relationship with the woman has essentially unraveled. What was an awkward goodbye snap, is now a marker in my life, a literal fork in the road. I don’t like to look at the picture to be honest, it’s sad. Perhaps sharing it can help me better accept what is. So here you go – I give it to you, stranger.

Just recently started editing the short my friend Pradeep and I co-wrote and co-directed. I probably shouldn’t be getting ahead of myself, but here’s a couple frames I pulled during editing today.

Got the chance to film Wayne Hancock’s performance while working a rock-doc on the Nelsonville Music Festival in Ohio. Pulled him aside afterward for a quick portrait. If I ever get a budget for a film, I want Wayne and his music to be in it. He is a one-of-a-kind human, and about as real as it gets. He of course makes kick-ass country-rockabilly music too. He’s on tour right now, so go see him if you can.

Visited my friend Robert “Pat” Patterson before I flew to Ohio in April. Pat is family to me. I met him about 4 years ago when I showed up at the Yountville Veterans Home fresh out the Marines and excited about my first photo class. Pat, 83, is a former Marine that enlisted at age 16 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He went on to fight in the Battle of Guadalcanal.
I’ve spent a lot of time with Pat, absorbed a lot of his stories and his past. He grew up near the train tracks in Duncan, Oklahoma and despite living a very modest life of hard work, he is one of the richest men I know. It’s difficult to describe the force of this man but his strength of character and his resilience is unmatched. I know that if there is any kind of afterlife, Pat will be there to welcome me with his bear voice, “Hot Damn!! I told you this shit was real, oh baby, let’s dance.” I could write a lot about Pat and the conversations we have had, but I’ll save it for now. I look forward to eating more oranges with you dear friend, hope you’re hanging in there.

It was a hill of grand gestures that lay in the middle of a working class neighborhood where we became victory.

I don’t know this man’s name. He was raking dirt in a walmart parking lot in Ohio. I don’t speak Spanish so we said nothing, I just took a quick couple of pictures. His face intrigued me, he could be in the movies.

Funny how you can spend energy trying to perfect a craft by adding complexity or depth and in the end these ideas fall away because what holds value to you actually required little thought, as these ideas were already such a reality.

From a shoot at the local California Academy Paul Mitchell school that I did for an old friend from High School. I always enjoy photographing people’s faces, but this is the first time I’ve ever attempted to photograph someone’s hair.
