They watch with a certain type of sanctity in their eyes. Looking into a glowing haze, as if a god were coming or going. The fading light reflects in them as they are flooded with the colors of impermanence or of the shade of their lover’s hair. I like to feed the birds at the beach. Stout velvet fur, yellow candy eyes. You spit a cherry out the window and the car becomes a little Galapagos Island. The big birds don’t see the little pieces–the details that make the big difference.
